Dayton Trip, 1909-2009
By Larry Kendall, K5END
I hadn't been to Ohio in several years, so when I decided to attend the Dayton Hamvention and Contest University, there was an obvious opportunity to tour the state and see the “real” people and environment of the Buckeye State. Whether to fly up was not an option. We knew in advance that we'd be bringing back a 1924 Victrola VV-220 that had been tucked away for years in a basement of a house built in 1909—just like any one of the other countless historical treasures one will find in basements, barns and museums in the Heartland. So it was necessary to take the SUV and drive the 1,200 miles from Houston, across Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky to reach Ohio. Prior to the Hamvention we would see the countryside, and then conclude the trip by visiting the US Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, including a Glenn Miller tribute concert Saturday evening.
Here are some photos I shot in an attempt to capture the experience. The astute reader will recognize this somewhat allegorical article for its purpose and relevance to Amateur Radio.
The Heartland
History is alive INSIDE many of those quaint old barns.

Near Mt. Gilead I met a gentleman who collects pre-1954 tractors manufactured in Plymouth, OH. He has a very specialized collection of these fine machines.

Most of these are restored to “mint” condition...

...and some are in line for restoration.
Of course, a preserved fleet of vintage pickups is the perfect complement to the farm machinery.

Next Stop, Dayton!

Who said attendance was down this year?
I don't know.
They must have been at a different Hamvention.
There were the usual sights...

...like this.
...and,

...three generations of Generals!
Many fine vendors.

This booth was popular.
And there appeared to be a designated waiting section for the (very patient) “YL club.”

Patience is a virtue—and it preserves relationships!

Everyone needs a break from the excitement after a while.
Next Day, WPAFB!

A fine sight.
There are more aircraft here than I could count. Most are inside the hangars, a few are outside.

The “Good,”

...the, “Bad,”
...and the “Ugly.”

The rain stopped just in time for the Glenn Miller tribute concert.

Performed by the USAF Band, in fine “Big-Band” style.
Local dancers were in the spirit of the event, with uniforms, shoes and even eyewear from the era.

This couple from Dayton knew all the '40's steps.
In today’s disposable, consumable economy, it’s time we took another look at things that will endure use and still work fine for decades, and compare that lifestyle to our present habit of supporting products that often become obsolete before a useful and complete operation manual can be written and published.
One bragging point about Amateur Radio is that it still works when all else fails. Let’s not overlook or toss aside the “boat anchor” radio equipment that will not fail us when it’s needed. DSP, SDR, PIC, RAM and the other modern IC, software, firmware, “rev.nth” miracles known by the sea of acronyms through which we swim daily are as convenient as they are fragile.
Those ignorant of their history are not only destined to repeat it, their ignorance may also deprive them of the tools and technology needed to survive it.

Great pictures and story. I have never been to Dayton and due to health problems I probably will never be able to go. I had a dream one time of going but then I got lost and couldn't find my way home.
Thanks for the article.

Actually I think this is the 5th one; or 4th. I dunno.
I have a couple more almost ready. One of these is rather technical so I want to proofread it a few hundred times more before I submit it. The other is an article on a project of another Ham. I have his permission, but I need to get him to proofread it for accuracy before I submit it.
Look for them within a few weeks, pending acceptance by eham.
Thanks for the compliments. My favorite photo above is the "YL club" reading fashion magazines and romance novels in the stadium seats while their Dayton-fixated OM browse the Hamvention. That image in the Hamvention context is a keeper.

Been trying to get my pictorial write up on Dayton the last couple of weeks but won't seem to go through.
None the less! The Air force Museum seems to be the hot attraction in Dayton. It will be my next stop when I visit Dayton again.
Thanks for the picture's!

It is certainly a breath of fresh air from the other articles by bashers and negative minded people we usually see on here.

I attended the 1978 Dayton Ham fest. I was 26 then. Now I'm 57. I remember going to the United States Air Force Museum. In those days they had parked right out front for everyone to see, the one and only XB-70A Valkyrie. She was a Mach 3 bomber. Fortunately she has been moved out of the weather, into a new hanger. As an item of interest, this plane was equipped with a Collins SSB HF rig. It operated on 20 meters. The idea was that if the Valkyrie ever had to make an emergency landing far from home, the pilots could shoot a 20 meter dipole and call home. Of course home would be Edwards Air Force Base in California. Since the pilots weren't Ham's, the F.C.C. granted them a special license. Imagine the Valkyrie operating today with the technology of today. What a Machine that would be.

Great article! Excellent pictures and writeup. Looks like a great mixture of fun and radio. Lots of things in this article that I enjoy,,:) I enjoy the old radio/phono gear along the lines of the Victrola W-220. Have an old Philco 38-89,an old RCA Victor 612V3,and a National NC-60 'SwingingSixty'. I love the old SWL gear,,:) I also have an old 1939 Ford 9N farm tractor. All the history, old music, old planes, tractors, trucks along with being at Dayton must have been a blast!
Here is a video of a fine old farm tractor showing its talent,,:) These old tractors will surprise you,,:) Thanks for article!

Excellent article! And I love the picture you got of my father, grandfather and I! With those helmets we were able to talk from and to anywhere, inside and out! Certainly made coordinating lunch a lot easier.
We made the 'mistake' of going to the AFB on Thursday, certainly made Saturday feel like Sunday! Next time we do the extra stuff on a Monday!

Interesting point K5END! Have you ever read 'The Mote In Gods Eye' by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle? It is a most excellent sci-fi book written in 1974. Robert A.Heinlein said that it was "possibly the finest science fiction novel I have ever read". Near the end of the novel they had a very interesting treatment of the idea in your very statement. If you have not read it you might find it an interesting read,,:)
