Announcing the Contest Compendium

The Contesting Compendium is up and running, at http://wiki.contesting.com. Our objective is to make this into a one-stop source for information on contesting, and to ensure that all the good stuff that is now scattered across the Internet doesn't succumb to the ravages of time, hard drive failures, or other accidents of history.

This new resource is not intended only for hard-core contesters - in fact, we're trying to make sure that there is an entry point on each topic for the ham who is brand new to contesting. No topic is too broad or too narrow, too elementary or too complex, so long as it bears on ham radio contesting - there is room in the Compendium for articles that are as broad as “antenna design for contesting” and as narrow as “contesting in Iraq in 2005.”

No small editorial group can build something so potentially huge, which is why we are looking for contributors on all topics. I`m committed to making this work, but it will fail unless it becomes a true community project. I'm going to suggest the broadest organizational outlines, but from that point forward it is up to hams and especially contesters around the world, who have information to contribute.

We (KM3T, K5TR, K5ZD,N5KO and I) have created a start to a Table of Contents. It might best be described as a rough outline or starting point for ideas on content and structure. You should feel free to edit or add to the Table of Contents and also to add actual content.

Please check out the How to Read/Browse and How To Contribute pages, for the nuts and bolts. You'll need to create an account to join in, but we pledge that none of your data will be shared outside the Compendium team.

Nothing is cast in concrete - if you want to suggest other ideas, edit away - everyone who signs up to become a contributor or editor and edit any page except those - typically articles from other sources reused in their entirety with permission of their authors - that are locked. My hope is that eventually we'll have hundreds of authors contributing material and keeping it up to date. If you don't want to edit other people's work, feel free to use the Discussion tab at the top of each page to give us your suggestions. And also please feel free to drop me a note if I can help you become a contributor.

Bravo! The wiki format is nice and familiar and I presume it means anyone can contribute. New visitors should check out the table of contents; there's already an amazing amount of material on this site.

Looks like a fine group.

For one, K5ZD was at CTU in May at Dayton with a great presentation on contesting ethics. I enjoyed it, and the whole day for that matter.

There is already a one-stop contesting site:
contesting.com. Instead of starting a competing
site, it would have been better to support the
existing one. The sponsors state that they
want to avoid "scattering contest information."
Yet they are doing precisely that. What is not
to like about contesting.com?

N6RK,

Did you see the URL that Pete posted in his article? It IS contesting.com.

There is more useful info at the wiki site, than the contesting.com site. By far.

COntesting.com doesn't seem to be updated too often.

To K2FOX

That's a clueless distinction. They are the same domain registration (i.e., same owner) ... there's no more difference between wiki.contesting.com and www.contesting.com than there is between www.eham.net/articles and www.eham.net/forums.

If that's the case, then my wiki.contesting .com login and password should work on www.contesting.com?

To K2FOX:

No ... and neither will your password for the contesting.com-hosted TowerTalk archives get you into the contesting.com-hosted TopBand archives.

Great job! I like the wiki a lot.

To K2FOX: At the bottom of the wiki.contesting.com page, there is a link called "About Contesting". Click that and see if that clears things up for you.

You contesters are destroying the planet through global warming. By using excessive (more than 5 watts) in your contests, you are consuming more than your fair share of the world's energy and creating tons of excessive, deadly greehouse gasses that will cause the seas to rise 20 feet and the planet to drown and incernerate!

The high preist of the global warming religion (Al Gore) said it, so it must be true. It has been decided. There is no longer room for debate. All contests must end if the planet is to survive.
