There's a progressive, upbeat thought for a ham radio operator to have...toning the technology "down a notch"..."keeping an old skill alive" Sounds like ham radio is on life-support!

You are right WI7B...from this article, it would sound like we indeed are aged on "life support." I have seen this approach time and time again in different publications whose editorial staff sends someone out to cover the what-ever-the-ham-event for human interest. It is just silly and I am not sure where the impression comes from. Is this what we hams are telling these "reporters." I don't see much in my station that indicates that "ham operators (are) not YIELDING to the future." At this very moment as I type, I am looking at nearly $45K worth of VERY modern equipment including an FTdx9000D; IC-7800; computers; remote linking; receivers/scanners; spectrum scopes, etc....and I only have a small limited station compared to many. From whom is this impression coming from? Young people are obviously needed to maintain our numbers. We should be providing correct information and impressions about the hobby. This can be a low-tech hobby or it may be as hi-tech as one wishes to make it...just a few remarks for what it is worth. Daniel Baral

Still, it remains a HOBBY. It has diverse facets and areas of special interest . Some people are attracted to high tech modes , others get a kick out of older gear and methods. Narrow the variety, diminish the participation.
When the landlines are all down, the cell sites overloaded or out of commision for whatever reason, good old wireless gets pressed into service. Whatever mode or age of the radio, communication can and will take place. In the meantime may we all enjoy the hobby for many reasons that vary from individual to individual.
