Why is it that almost without exception all of these news reports of Hams who die in tower incidents are always "safe"? And love their family. And were fantastic human beings. And professionally competent. And it was a "freak accident".
There was no reported investigation in the news account of this incident. No safety assessment. Only the word of local hams and family members. Where is the objective look at what happened? Who is this ham that declared it to be a "Freak" accident? What is the basis of his conclusion? What is his training? Who conducted the review of the incident?
How do we know the tower was structurally sound? When was it last inspected? By whom? What methods were used in the set up? Who witnessed the event? Is there culpability on the part of the club? Should a wrongful death suit be considered?
These are but a few of the questions raised by this incident. They should be answered by someone other than hams. An impartial investigation should be conducted and the findings published in Ham radio media. There may be valuable, life saving information to be had.

I observe that alot of the best and brightest among hams have died lately. Often at relatively young ages.
Freak accidents, freak diseases, at least two that were run down accidentally. Huh.

If you go here...
=> http://www.blossomlandara.org/Activities/Activities.html
you can see a photo of Field Day in 2007 with possibly the same tower that was invovled in the accident. Looks like a standard tower.
One can suspect that the tower segements were not inspected thoroughly before installation and that cracking or rust was possibly overlooked.

It seems to me that if a Thirty-foot tower (or even a Sixty-foot) base section colapses, there must have been a serious problem with the mechanics of the system.
Something had to be obviously incorrect for that to happen.
I would like to know more about the tower like the brand, base setup and guys.
Seems that safety may have been in the hip pocket on this one!!
It is always very sad to hear of these accidents....

No risk taken to do it but obviously he "ran out of time" cause he was clearly in a rush or showing off...
The matter is sad but almost always preventable. However, I must raise 1 question:
Is it any wonder why commercial tower owners hesitate allowing hams to have access to their towers?
Every club should have a Safety Officer, more than an ARRL PIO, not necessarily OSHA doctrine but common sense should prevail regardless of any "official" requirement.
Common sense can't be legislated, it must be parented & taught...

According to the story I read, the tower collapsed under him while he was climbing it.
It's not clear whether that means it fell over, or if something broke, nor what the exact failure was (guy wire? tower leg? crank-up that telescoped? foundation failure?)
Does anyone know?
My reason for asking is that the more we know about what happened, the better we can avoid a recurrence.

My condolences to his family and friends. I did not know KE4PM but I feel for their loss.
