This article is nothing more than a sales pitch to purchase a $115 reciever from NASA -- "NASA has come up with a $115 radiotelescope kit that a school science class or other interested observers can put together. The kit includes all of the parts required to construct a 20 MHz radio receiver."

Let's see ... discussion of extra terrestrial planet, moon and volcanos. Radio waves, millions of watts, plasma streams and for $115 you can listen as well as see it. And the telescope modification is a kit to be assembled and can be shared with any number of people.
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me as a lesson plan or personal interest item.

The local science teacher can contact a local ham operator, who will provide an antenna, expert knowledge and radio demonstration *for free*.

Or the kids can have the "opportuntiy" to build their own antennae and receiver from a kit. As an added bonus they will experience the satisfaction that often comes from such a project that you have done pretty much on your own rather than having someone do it for you.Perhaps an incentive for further study and increased interest. A lot like learning to play the guitar or having the local rock star "play" his for you.
Depends on who you want to see have an "opportunity"
