I see tremendous potential for APRS in terms of electronic messaging. It is perfectly suited for a ham "IM".
Bob Bruninga (WB4APR) goes through the ham "IM" options quite extensively here: http://aprs.org/aprs-messaging.html
So I'm surprised that I see so little APRS messaging traffic. I'm in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and I see a lot of APRS activity but almost none of it is messaging. This strikes me as odd.
To me the most interesting part of amateur radio is that it does not need the Internet. That I could send a message to my father in law near Green Bay via APRS repeaters is just amazing to me. So I'm just surprised I don't see more traffic.
Am I missing something?

Keyboards seem to be a problem, IMHO. I have a D7 and D700, and once received a message from a friend over APRS. He was using UIview32, so typing out a quick message to me was no big deal. I was on a bicycle attempting to reply using the D7 keypad. This proved to be very frustrating to say the least. If someone came up with an opentracker like device (or next generation HT) that had a keyboard or T9 text input at the right price, texting may become a little more popular.
There is a keyboard available for the D700, but I don't know of anyone who uses it.

Seems that we are ahead of you here in Arkansas. We have lots and lots of APRS messenger traffic, including email and winlink via APRS. My digi/Igate handles as many as 20/30 messages a day. I think it is mostly a matter of folks not knowing the capabilities of APRS especially for Ecom use.

There is great potential here. I have daily "chats" with Glenn WB2LMV via APRS, and he's in the Catskills, and I'm in Buffalo. And I can do so either RFONLY, or when I'm out and about using my BlackBerry to send via TCPIP.
It really is a dynamic mode...

When I designed the Micro-Trak-TT4, I added a PS/2 connector for a keyboard, and I expect Byonics will have keyboard support written for it fairly soon. We found that mini-keyboards are cheap and readily avaiable. We will also use the keyboard to change the programmed parameters, i.e, call sign, digipath, etc.
