Mounting GPS unit on VX8R Reply
by N3CI on June 11, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I am getting back into APRS after many years away from it and just bought a VX8R. I opted to get the speaker mike and to mount the GPS unit on top of the mike. Is this what most users do? Is there an advantage to mounting the unit directly on the HT, other than not having a microphone to carry around? That is, does one location work better than another?

I mounted my GPS on top of the HT. When I use the HT on my motorcycle, I don't want a mic on a cable because I couldn't use it with a helmet.
Your choice is personal and based on how you will use your radio.

I bought the external mike thinking that when backpacking I would get better performance with the mike and GPS mounted high up on the shoulder straps of the rucksack.

In practice I found that the GPS is so sensitive that it works just fine when mounted directly on the VX8R and worn on the belt.

I now put it on the mike if I want to use an external mike, and leave it on the radio any other time.

I use the GPS mounted on the external mic. It's easy enough to clip onto my pack strap, dash board or whatever is nearby for a quik QSO.

I felt it was a better buy to go for the external mic then pay for the GPS antenna and then a plastic mount to attach it to the radio.

Just got a VX-8R with both the GPS antenna bracket and speaker mic. If you want to use the radio with and without GPS, I'm thinking the speaker-mic is the way to go. It's easy enough to mount the GPS antenna bracket but you have to remove the antenna and the rubber piece that serves as a cap for the mic connection and a seal for the antenna. Easier to leave the antenna on and just uncover the mic connector. That way, I won't lose the little rubber cover and antenna gasket.
