Since I am stuck on a long business trip to Europe this summer I decided to treat myself to a new Yaesu vx8r. I am new to APRS. While here in Germany I decided to try out the APRS operation and watch my movements on the internet. Overall it works fine although I sure could use a better antenna. APRS with the supplied rubber duck is almost impossible unless you are very close to some igate. Setting up the European frequency I started wondering about the call sign. By regulation one would do a voice transmit with the preface DL/ in Germany. The Yaesu and most of the radios will only allow a simple call sign however. So I decided to add the DL/ call sign in the transmitted comment which should in my opinion make it legal. Has anyone thought about this?

It is legal in the US to use an alias, however one must include the call sign in the comments or beacon text. I would suspect it's the same in Germany, but I think I would check. Have fun. 73 de Lindy

I put my call sign with the prefix for Germany in the comment section so from everything I see this is legal. I am picking up quite a number of non german call signs here as well traveling though the area APRS. It is pretty cool to watch the activity. Overall activity is quite high but there are not that many digipeaters or igates as in the urban parts of the US. Repeater use is different too.
