I have a tempo 2020 that I have never tried to transmit on, and have only used it to receive. I finally had the time to try to tune it up to see if it will transmit.
After turning on the heater and letting it warm up for 30 seconds per instruction manual, I set the switch to manual position, but the needle doesnt move on the meter (set to 1K position). Bias control adjustment doesnt change anything - I assume the final tubes are dead, right?
What is involved to replace them? After unplugging and carefully removing the cover plate, I see terminals and wires attached to the top of each tube. How do they come of (and back on), and what else do I need to know to avoid damage to the unit (and to me)?
Obviously I have never worked on this this type of equipment, but if it is fairly simple, I think I can do it with proper directions. Thanks

I think it would be foolhearty to change the finals without knowing more about what is going on. Also there are hazardous voltages in a tube transmitter and one should know how to work safely before attempting any repairs.
I don't have a 2020 and can't find a picture clear enough to know what the meter measures such as IP, HV, ALC, or what. But "1K" is not a prameter that is measured. If the meter has HV (plate voltage) what does it indicate?
IP should only indicate when the transmiter is keyed, so you can't set the bias without keying the mike or key.
You may not have any problem or perhaps have some other problem, but changing the finals without farther checking is a bad idea.
Do you know anyone with experience with hybrid transceivers that can help you check this rig out?
This would be the best path to take. Trying to repair something over forum messages is a super task.
Good Luck
Allen

I had a Tempo One that needed a "shorting" plug installed in the rear before it would transmit.

This ham has a web site showing a 2020:
http://www.accessatc.net/~rjlutz/vint_ssb.html
Manual on line:
http://www.rigpix.com/mischam/uniden_2020.pdf
1k is actually IK, with I meaning current.
Are you using a dummy load?
Trying to "load" into high SWR is going to be a problem.
I see from the manual that you don't need a shorting plug like my tempo One did.
I'm sure by now you've discovered you can adjust the pre-select for best receive and probably find that is close to where it will be for transmit.
While your rig will receive below 10 meters, unless someone modified it, it will not transmit there.
If you scan on tempo 2020 in this section, you'll find other posts about your rig and find others who own that rig.

I have the manual for the 2020. The section just before tuning states that one should "... set the Manu/rec/vox switch to manu position and check the plate current ( meter switch must be put in the 1K position). The needle should be positioned over the green triangle on the 1K scale. If the bias current is incorrect, adjust rear panel bias until the reading on the triangle is correct (about 60ma)"
I had the unit connected to my MFJ 949 tuner dummy load.
After following the above instruction, I saw no movement at all on the meter,

I have 2 Tempo 2020s. One I bought brand new in 1977. On the top left of the front panel is a switch. It says INT, TexT, Rext ....Set the switch on INT. By doing this the radio acts like a tranceiver and will transmit and receive. Text means external transmitter so only the receiver works and goes with a external transmitter.
Next to the PWR switch on the front panel is a switch for filiment on /off. It must be on (uo) because it provides voltage to the filaments of the tube finals.
On the back of the radio near the bottom of the back panel is a switch that says poer amp on/off. It mus be on.
Do not mess with internal parts of the radio unless you have some ideal of the hazards involved.High Voltages, even not very high ones, can kill. The driver tube 12BY7 may need repacement, but they last a long time. Hope this helps. Bill
