Hi all, recently picked up a TS 820 with a "YF-88H250" cw filter installed. The rigs DH switch was modified to select between the YG-88S and YF-88H filters - just got finished replacing the dial and meter bulbs with leds and decided to restore the DH switch back to its original function.
I managed to undo the filter switch modification but am having trouble with the rig transmitting a carrier when the IF2 jumper is set to either "B" or "C"(looking at the service/user manual). It works fine when IF2 is set to "A" but it doesn't select the cw filter when in cw mode, seems like its only using the ssb filter. If I set the IF2 jumper to "B" or "C" the cw filter works fine in receive(really narrow) but I can't seem to get any rf out. There's no ALC movement, IP just sits at zero, the sg/heater switch is in the on position, carrier is varied from min to max with no effect, internal rf meter reads 0, and hv reads about 900 volts.
Right now I have the IF2 jumper setting at position "A". It works - I can get about 100 - 120 watts into a dummy load, depending on band but for cw the filter is not enabled. It looks nice with the leds and all but I'm hoping to get the filter working and be able to put out rf too while the filter is enabled. Anyone have any ideas as to whats wrong?
I know the rig it quite old - I bought from a ham that forgot to mention the DH button mod that said the rig was "refurbished" by another ham. Even with the DH button mod I found that either I could only transmit an rf carrier when the switch was in the "wide" position , regardless of mode with the IF2 jumper in position "C". Maybe the cw filter thats installed is not compatible? The info on the filter reads:
YF-88H250 NO. 171
FREQ: 8830.7kHZ
YAKUMO TUSIN KOGYO CO., LTD.
I have a YG-88C on hand - would this be preferable to the YF-88H? I've searched the net and kenwood service/user manuals(TS 820) for the YF-88H part number and can't find any info on it. Anyone know what this filter originally belonged to(kenwood, yaesu, icom)?

The YF-88H250 CW filter is a "Yaesu" filter designed for use in Yaesu radios, not Kenwood.
I would try the YG filter since it is designed for Kenwood radios.
The IF2 plug has 3 positions, "A", "B", and "C". Each position of the IF2 plug is as follows:
1. Position "A", the sideband filter is selected regardless of the MODE switch position and whether you have a CW filter installed or not.
2. Position "B" the sideband filter is selected in USB, LSB, and FSK modes and the CW filter is selected in CW and TUNE modes.
3. Position "C", the sideband filter is selected in USB and LSB modes and the CW filter is selected in FSK, TUNE, and CW modes.
This is not fully explained in the 820's operator's manual on page 34. You can see this by reviewing the 820's service manual's schematic diagrams on page's 54 and 69, especially the MODE switch wafer S6-1 on page 69.

Gents, thanks very much for the advice. I managed to fix the problem by removing the YF-88H filter and dropping in the YG-88C filter and double checking the S6-1 wafer per the schematics. IF2 jumper is set to "C" position and she works great for cw and fsk modes, not to mention it looks nice with the leds I put in it. This one is definitely a keeper! Thanks again!
