Hi,
I recently acquired a Heathkit HX-11 transmitter and am trying to find additional information on it - schematitcs, manuals, etc. What is the value of this radio - is it worth trying to fix it up?
Thanks and 73,
N2IU

It's a novice type CW transmitter 50 watts on 80,40,20,15 and 10 meters. Partial manual available on the Bama site (will need to download DJVU viewer from Lizard Tech). Bama is a free site.
What's it worth? Is it worth fixing up? To me nothing, on Ebay $20 to maybe $50 if in good working order. Should be an acceptable CW rig for a beginner.
Fixing up worthwhile, that's up to you. Good experience and should be pretty easy to repair unless some part like the power transformer is bad.

The HX-11 replaced the DX-20 in the Heath Lineup.
Just for clarification, that's 50 watts input and about 30 watts out, depending on your antenna.

The manual for the HX-11 is available as a free download here:
http://bama.edebris.com/manuals/heath/hx11/
You need a viewer capable of reading .djvu files. Links to same are on the site.

The HX-11 is the successor to the popular DX-20. 50 watts input, crystal controlled, CW-only, 80/40/20/15/10 meters. 6CL6 oscillator drives 6DQ6 amplifier with 5U4 rectifier. Cathode keying; there's at least 100 volts on the key line when the key is up, and whatever keys the rig has to pass about 150 mA key down.
Tuneup is pretty simple but it is not "tune for max" nor obvious if you're not familiar with the rig.
The main difference from the DX-20 is the inclusion of a built-in low-pass filter. That means you need to keep the SWR down below about 3:1.
It can be used with a VFO but there'a minor mod needed if you decide to do so. The VF-1 is a decent match for it but the HX-11 doesn't have an accessory socket to power an external VFO. Probably the simplest VFO for the rig would be a converted ARC-5 tx run at low B+.
If the rig hasn't been restored, watch out for the usual weaknesses:
- Dried out electrolytics in the power supply
- Cracked and otherwise bad insulation on the power cord and similar wires
- Bad tubes and bad connections
- Carbon comp resistors that have changed value (they usually drift high)

I forgot the most important: Is it worth fixing up?
That depends on what you want to do with it. It's a good 50-watt CW-only rig for 80, 40 and 20 meters, very typical of what Novices used from the 1950s to the 1970s or so. The tubes and most parts are pretty common; the only really rare things are the power transformer and filter choke.
Probably the biggest issue is that you need a VFO or crystals for it.

N2EY -
Did you get to operate on 20 when you were a Novice? I must have missed that opportunity ;>).
Now, 80, 40 and 15 meter CW - that I did!.

K7KBN:
No, I never operated on 20 as a Novice...(I could have worded earlier post better, though!)
Point is, the HX-11/DX-20 are at their best on 80/40/20. While the rigs cover 15 and 10, their performance on those bands may be a little less. 10 in particular has the PA doubling IIRC.

Some guy with a company named Data Professionals bought all the rights to all Legacy Heathkit products. You can no longer download them from Bama or other free download sites. Go ahead, try.. they are gone. He's now selling them on his site. I think it's pretty lame, but that's my opinion. Here's his site:

Jim, by golly it is so!! How many times can the bones of a dead company be gnawed?
The main sufferers from this one will be people asking questions about some piece of Heath gear on eHam. Elmers won't be able to download schematics and give advice.
Oh well, as Scarlet O'Hara said: "Tomorrow is another day." And I wonder what will disapear then.
