CW -- XCVR advice request Reply
by KT4UF on September 21, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
I recently bought a used Icom IC-730 and have had trouble making QSO's... When i try to xmt, it only powers up to about 40% of the meter reading. I am not sure if I have a meter issue, an SWR issue, or what.

I am wondering if I am better off buying a Icom 718 or a Yaesu FT 450 or repairing the rig i have...

Anyone available to see if they can hear me transmitting? It would need to be on 40 or 20 or 15...

thanks

Before you give up on the old rig, are you sure you don't have an swr problem making it cut back? Have you got a dummy load you can test it into?

Assuming you've already covered all those bases, I'd be happy to meet you on the air. Probably 40m would work, drop me an e-mail to kmiller01 at ticnet dot com and we'll set up a sked.

can you check it with another meter
do you have a dummy load

do you have more than one antenna
that you can try

40% out 100 watt rig
are you geting 40 watts output

note
40 watts to a good antenna

on 80/40/30/20 cw

should give you
many nice rag chew contacts

is your antenna and feed line ok

it may not be your radio

can you borrow or use a friends
dummy load

if not
can you haul your radio
to another ham ops station
hook your radio to their watt meter/antenna

if it works then
its not your radio
but your feed / antenna system

good luck

You really need to put it on a dummy load, preferably with an external power meter, in order to know if you have a problem with the radio.

Also, what are you using for a power supply? If an AC supply, are you sure it is rated to handle the 20A current draw on key down CW? Measure the output voltage while the radio is keyed to ensure it is 13.8 Volts. Do the panel lights on the radio dim when you key the radio? At 20A too small a wire guage or a poor connection can cause the voltage to drop at the radio and that will lower the output power. It'll also cause the panel lights to dim down if drops enough.
