I ordered an Ameritron AL-1500 with a Chinese tube about 6 months ago. Because my TS-2000 has a high peak turn-on spike, it kept shutting the amplifier off. I sent it back the next day and had them send me an AL-82 which I still have. I can check my credit card balance on line and kept waiting for them to give me credit for the AL-1500. I called them several times and some one told me the amp was sitting in the back and had not been checked out. This went on for two weeks and I told them if they didn't give me credit I was going to file a dispute which I did. This got them off their duffs and they finally gave me credit. \My credit card was charged for two amps and was drawing interest. Now they won't take my credit card and threatened to black list me with other dealers. HRO and AES said there would be no problem with me using my card. Be careful with who you do business wuth!

Hi Jim,

contact ARRL advertising dept.
R&L must follow ARRL guidelines if they
run ads in QST.

if they don't want to sell to you then that is
their choice. Not like you sent the thing back
trashed, you did buy a more expensive amp.

AL-82 is about $2100. Al-1500 is about $2,500 with the imported tube which is a very valuable component. I could see that they would want to have a tech make sure it wasn't switched. But two weeks is excessive. Could be they were backed up.

From their standpoint, what do they do with the 1-day old amp? Sell it as new, or take $200 off and sell it as a demo?

Reading that again I see you had a gripe, a legitimate one, and you asked for your money back AND filed a dispute within 2 weeks. I know a great deal about selling products online with credit cards. Filing a dispute so quickly isn't at all common.

From their standpoint they SHOULD be worried that you could get credited twice for $2,500, once from their credit and once as a result of the dispute you filed. Then getting that corrected would be very difficult in some circumstances.

Selling costly and easily resalable products, online ham suppliers probably get fraudulent attempts virtually every day.

I'm just thinking how most small sellers would handle such a transaction... with great care.
