Recently my car was broken in to and the control head for my Yaesu FT-7800R was stolen, among many other things. I contacted Yaesu to find out about replacing the control head and was informed that they do not sell just the control head and that I would have to buy a whole new radio.
Aside from the convenience of taking up less room in the driver's area, one of the reasons that I had chosen to go with the Yaesu model was in the hopes that if it was stolen I wouldn't have to buy the whole thing to replace it. I guess you live and learn, I for one won't be buying anymore Yaesu products.

Somehow I'm really not surprised, just extremely irritated. It wasn't like I was looking for them to just give me a new control head, I had expected to pay, though admittedly my expectations were to pay less than the cost of a new radio. I guess the bottom line is money rather than keeping your customers happy.

I agree with ECW.
If the product is still in production and sold on the market, there's no way half the rig costs as much as the whole rig, and the control head should be considered a "spare part."
In the computer industry, this would be like telling somebody they had to buy a new PC if their monitor failed.
Poor business practice. Manufacturers should always make spares (CRUs, or customer replaceable units) available at some reasonable cost point, while maintaining profitability on it.
Actually, in my industry, when we sell a system, we sell it (usually) complete with spares that are likely to fail or be removed, and the spares are sold at profit, but for much less than the cost of the complete system. No reason this industry should be any different.

This is why I stay with modified commercial communications equipment instead of "ham radio" products. I just bought a replacement part for my 30+ year old (commercial) monitor receiver, but when I tried to order a replacement part for a five year old (ham) transceiver to fix for a friend, I was told that it was NLA (no longer available), but they had the unmitigated optimism to send me literature on their brand spanking new equivalent. As if I would recommend that he buy another one of their products. He didn't, either!

A lot of car stereo systems are like this too if they have the detachable face. It's to prevent people from still stealing the body of the radio and ordering a new face for like 50 bucks. It does suck though if someone does steal just the face or for some reason the face stops working.
