Programming and cat for Yaesu FT-857D and linux

Is anyone aware of programming and/or control software for Yaesu FT-857D & FT-897D? I have come across several version for Windows, but none for Linux. I came across grig, but I am looking more for something to do memory management.

A quick look at the operating manuals for the ft857d page 115 & ft897d page 64 show that there are no opcodes that can be used to set memory channels on either of those rigs (I had the same problem when I wrote the hamlib support for the ft100d)
If there is memory management in any windows software, then they are 'soft' channels controlled by the computer software, and are not the same as memory channels in the radio itself.
In other words -- don't blame linux/hamlib/grig, but rather Yaesu -- they did not give us programmers any way to set/select a memory channel on the radio.

At the risk of starting a flame war, but hopefully not. I am not blaming Linux programmers, I am simply trying to find something I can use without having to install M$ or software written to run on it. A VM may be the solution. You mentioned the lack of op codes, what are the windows programmers using? Obviously they are doing memory management and even cloning radios.

If you are running linux or thinking about it, why ask whether it works or doesn't before just trying it? If you are going linux, you are experimenting -- right? Just try it. I have found that stuff having to do with serial ports and hardware interfacing is very problematic using wine. Sometimes you can make things work by substituting native windows DLLs from windows itself. Admittedly this is impure, but again your into a hacking stituation here.
If you don't like dealing with this sort of stuff, you need to go back to windows. Linux just doesn't have the following in the ham community to provide the wide variety of interface software you need.
What I find is that running windows ham software via virtual machines in linux provides a middle ground. You can still run most ham software with Win98 or Win2k. Both of these do not require activation and associated hassles. You can probably find a way to procure a copy of these vintage operating systems from ham buddies or friends or relatives who are discarding old computers.
I have recently settled on virtualbox. It provides a way to run ham software in a virtual machine and has interfaces to serial, usb, ethernet, floppy and CD drives. You can run it in seamless window mode where you can't even tell its not a native linux window.
My MS operating system of choice is win2k. You install it just as if it were a real PC from the MS distro. disks. It will go out thru the ethernet port and update itself and voila, you have a playpen to install all your windows ham software, while still having the linux host available for all that linux offers.
Just remember, with linux you're going to have to get your hands dirty. Just like Ham Radio.

I love to experiment. I don't care to throw money up a wild boar's rear end. If someone else has it working with Wine then maybe it's time to find a use for Wine. So far I have only found one thing I 'need' that I have not found a Linux friendly alternative for. That being StormLab. As I stated a VM may be the easiest alternative, but it sure would be nice to have a native Linux application. And no I am not "blaming" anyone Linux, Debian, Programmers, Microsoft, Ham radio, the readers of this list, the government, the Swedish Swim team, my hound, or anyone else (Well, maybe Yaesu). I simply asked questions. If someone has credible helpful information in reference to Linux compatible CAT/MM software for FT-857/FT-897 or has had experience with Wine and ADMS (Good, Bad, or Ugly) please let me know. Meanwhile back at the shack I am going to go see who has the best deal on the radio package I am about to order. Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

there is a program for Linux that can copy and write the memory for the ft-8x7 called vxu. the website for it is http://www.onjapan.net/ham/ i do not have any experience with it yet as i have issues with my cat cable giving me interference.

Thanks for the info on vxu. I will give it a shot. Unfortunately I ordered the ADMS software with the radio so I will also try it with wine and report back. At least there will be a crumb trail for other linuxites to follow.
