Field day for kids Reply

I will be having my nephew and niece over for a few hours during Field Day. We will be working 1 D from our home.

I want them to make contacts, but not get totally blown off the air. Any suggestions for identifying GOTA stations from their call? Any suggestions for bands that will be active, but not insane? We will likely be on the air from 1830 to 2100 CDT on Saturday.

No real good way to determine a GOTA station from a club or group Field Day station. The exchange for both a regular FD station and a GOTA from the same group will be the same.

You might listen for an operator that seems unsure of him/herself. That is NOT meant as a slam, but the whole idea behind a GOTA station is to get inactive amateurs/newly licensed amateurs and the unlicensed public on the air. Individuals not accustomed to being on amateur radio MAY be uncomfortable/nervous operating a GOTA station. Seasoned operators will have a tendancy to be more smooth or more relaxed.

I wouldn't sweat regular FD station vs. GOTA.
Just search & pounce the band of interest and have the youngsters make the contact. FD stations know that both seasoned ops and newcomers will be on the bands and will usually work hard to complete the contact.

Hope the kids have a BALL !!!!!!

By the way,
all the bands should be insane !!!!

At 6:30 central time both 20 & 40 should be active. 20 will be settling down for the day as dusk approaches, and 40 will be going long.

Again, Good Luck !!!!

Check 15, 10, and 6 meters. If they are open, they should be active but not as crowded as 20 meters. And simple antennas work well on these bands when they are open.

73 & have fun!
