busted call in IARU - correct it? Reply
by N8MHD on July 15, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
I played a while in the IARU contest, and decided to try submitting a log, just to learn. So I submitted, and it was accepted -- good so far. A couple of days later, I realized that one of the my qso's was copied incorrectly: I had heard V3JUB, but it should have been V31UB. I'm comfortable with me not getting credit for the incorrect call, but is he penalized for my error? That bothers me. Should/can I resubmit with a corrected call?

This is an area of contesting ethics that I don't understand yet. I suspect the right thing to do is enter what I heard, and accept the consequences. Advice welcome.

If you take it out of your log, he will be penalized with a "NIL" (a not in log).

You can correct your log and resubmit it to the contest robot. It will substitute the new submission for the previous one.

Is it a radio contest or a computer contest? What you copied into your log is what should be submitted. It's fine to correct yourself on the fly; but, I get the impression that you learned the correct call after the contest, right?

I would leave the incorrectly copied call in the log. He'll (very likely) get credit for the QSO, you'll get a busted QSO. Better to work on your accuracy than to tweak the log...

Thanks for the feedback. I googled the call after the contest, to find out where he was, and discovered what Belize calls look like. The most important thing here is that he will (likely) get credit.

On the other hand, the robot flagged a call as having no number -- I had typed in o instead of 0. For that one, my (paper) log was correct, and the error was in the retyping. That one I resubmitted.

A contest has a different feel when it matters to someone whether or not you copied correctly. It makes Field Day seem a bit too relaxed. Lots more to learn....

Interesting...I've never had it flag a call for no number. If you stick with it, you'll eventually keep the log on the computer as you make the contacts. So, hopefully you won't have transcription errors!

Welcome to HF contesting beyond Field Day!

I did something similar, My N1MM logger wasnt talking to the radio so a few of the QSO read 14.200 which is below my allowable range. I submitted and haven't heard anything yet. I have a few emailes out to get the correct frequency but didnt hear back form a few.

I look at it this way: I got the experience contesting.

I read that if one is disqualifed, you cant do that contest the next year. If that happens, I'll fight it, just to be able to do it next year.

All that's needed in the log is a notation of the band. That might be 14, 14.200, 14000, 14.336....whatever. Exact frequencies are not required. The log checking process doesn't check to see whether or not you stayed within your appropriate band segment. That's up to you.

Hope y'all enjoyed the IARU event and hope you'll check out some of the other upcoming fun events: IOTA this weekend, North American QSO Parties in August, etc.

This sort of thing is addressed in the latest issue of QST. I don't have it handy, so I'm pulling from memory here... You won't get credit for the QSO (obviously). "Most" checkers, though, will notice that V31UB's log shows a QSO with N8MHD at the same time that N8MHD's log shows a QSO with a call similar to V31UB, and V31UB will get credit for the QSO.
