MP-1 Super Antenna and this weekends contest Reply

Hello all,

I started out Saturday 7 March 09 just trying to work on my North America QRP Assoc. challenge of the month, which is to work as many stations CW as possible. After 3 CW contacts on 40 meters, I jumped to 20 meters and found the ARRL Contest going on SSB. I use an FT-817ND and an MP-1 Super Ant on the tripod indoors. I went ahead and called a Czec Republic call and I got through with 5w SSB and the MP-1. Worked a few others and had to run some errands. On the way around town it occured to me to hook up my FT-857D to the MP-1 and see who I could get. With Ant indoors still, I worked many caribbean stations, Belgium, Denmark, France and Alaska. Wattage ranged from 35w to 100w. The MP-1 worked like a champ. Not only a great QRP match for the 817 but a great match with the 857D. If you think this antenna does not work......you really need to give it another shot. I used the stock radials with 40/20/15 meters. All was fine.

If you think this antenna does not work......

Maybe it was good propagation?

I'd be worried that using an antenna like that indoors even with moderate power would exceed the safe RF radiation limits for a person so close...Any opinions...

Congrats with the QRP results and the MP-1 indoors. Do you use a tuner or are you able to fine tune the SWR down without that aid? Is the whip the provided short one or are you using a longer one?

I'd be careful about having the antenna and 100W too close but perhaps you have it in another room.

Be that as it may...good going.

Probably should have been clearer in my posting. I moved the antenna out on the deck for the 100W portion of the contesting. Not going to cook the wife and 5 year old. All my QRP is done with the antenna indoors. I forgot the length of the whip, but it is the one that came with the antenna. I use an LDG Z-100 AT with the MP-1 to fine tune it. I go by listening first for the highest noise level and then use the tuner. I marked the coil for 20 and 40 and get a solid green light on the tuner which means 1:5 to 1 or less on SWR. I may pursue getting a larger whip. This is not a permenant configuration. I would like to put a stealthy vertical or long wire out side and get a real shack set up. This is only temp but working out nicely. I have added about 5 more states since the original post.

25W was the highest I transmitted indoors. Went back and read the original post and in is misleading with the sentence "With the antenna still indoors........worked blah blah.

K2LGO:

The RF levels will be below the FCC limits within a couple of feet when running 100 W. There are several online calculators for this.

I use EZNEC to get a better number. The online calculators assume a far-field E/H ratio, which is not what we have close to an antenna.

In any event if you can't see it it can't hurt you.
