The exchange for each contest is different.
Go to www.contesting.com and down near the bottom of the page, there is a contest calendar.
The contest calendar has links to the specific rules for each contest.
Click the individual link to find out the exchange for the particular contest.
MOST contest numbers are consecutive serial numbers.
Your first contact in the contest is #1, the second is #2....etc.
In some cases, the numbers exchanged are member numbers, such as 10-10 club member numbers.

You have to read the rules of the contest in question to determine the "exchange".
Doug, does your capital letters work on your keyboard?
Your writing would be easier to read if you used capital letters where appropriate.

The rules of the exchage of any given contest depend on the contest itself. Each contest is different.
For information on contests you might go to...
www.contesting.com
This is a web site devoted to those who enjoy going CQ Contest till their throat gets all sore and their wrist ache requires Bayer/3 pills.

Oh, and for our "No Code" friends, if the exchange asks for your "CQ Zone Number" and your callsign has a "6" in it, "6" is NOT your CQ Zone number....
