Is KPC-2 Still Useful?

I've been inactive in the hobby for several years. However, I still have some 2-meter gear and a Kantronics KPC-2. Can I still connect to packet networks with the KPC-2, or has the state of the art passed me by?
Thanks,
Jeff NK1F

1200 Baud packet is pretty much the same as it ever was. If you can find some activity in your area, the KPC-2 should still work.

Yes indeed, your KPC-2 will work fine for regular packet operation. 1200-baud is still 1200-baud so you won't have any problems utilizing normal packet operations.
I used to own a KPC-2 and it worked fine on the local packet network. I only got rid of it because I wanted the newer KPC-3 for other features the KPC-2 didn't have, but for basic packet operation it worked fine.

Thanks for the responses. I'm pleased to know that my KPC-2 is still usable. Maybe this is the incentive I need to set up my 2m gear and get back on the air.

I have one too, and was wanting to connect it again. The old computer had WAAAYYYY different connections. I will need a 25 pin to a 9 pin on the newer Dell computer? Does this sound about right? The newer Dells only have 25 pin printer ports that won't work, so I assume I need to access via the 9 pin?

If the old modem uses a _parallel_ port (I forget how many pins those had), there is no simple "serial-to-parallel" adapter that will work. [At least, I don't _think_ there is].
If it uses a _serial_ port, a 25-pin (DB-25) to 9-pin connector (DB-9) should be OK.

YES, the KPC-2 is still useful - especially for Host Mode or Beacon service!
I upgraded one for a club member, just last month.
1. I updated the EPROM firmware to version 5.02 from 2.82. I do not have this image, Erik provided me the EPROM from the MN Packet/D-Star system.
2. When you perform this firmware upgrade (v5.02 HostMode interface) this REQUIRES an EEPROM upgrade from the 24C04 to the 24C16. This part in an adjacent scoket is very inexpensive (30 cents).
3. In addition, I installed the SmartWatch option.
I have that posted on QRZ, but can cross post here -- if requested.
For CABLES, ASK for a PC SERIAL MODEM cable (DB-25 to DB-9) -- these were plentiful in 1980s and through 1990s at ANY computer store!
You can also build this cable, if you desire. Proper pin-outs are very EASY to Google search on. DO NOT wire for Null modem (incorrect cable/pin-out).
