Hi All,
Decided to put my recently acquired rig to work in Digi. I can use my old home brewed interface which uses my RS232 and sound card & Cat jack for ptt/audio which I had build for my FT817. However my newer laptop likes USB better than RS232 :-)
The Cat/Linear jack is already in use from a USB/Cat cable I got from ebay, so I was thinking If the Data jack can be used instead for the sound card audio in/out ???
Any ideas ??

The FT-857's rear panel 6-pin mini din DATA jack IS for sound card or TNC digital. You should have a page in your manual with a picture of it, along with pin out. Use DATA out (1200bps) for the receive audio, DATA in for transmit audio, PTT for PTT, and Ground for ground.
Although it is common practice, the DATA jacks being labeled as "DATA" isn't really true, in fact the signals are audio or control.
If you want to spend a $100, a good solution is the SignalinkUSB. It is an external USB sound card and interface, and comes with a cable of your choosing (and they do have the 6-pin mini din). Also uses the USB port of your computer, and gets it's power from the computer.

Hi James
Actually I got an Asian USB Cat from ebay for 12 Euro (8 USD) which works well... The only downside is that the manufacturer did not included a female jack to give access to the unused inputs/outputs...
Anyway, I managed to find all the parts I need for an extra audio in/out board, will use the data jack and will be on the air in no time :-)
Thanks
Merry Christmas

G4ZLP has a cable that he sells on ebay. It is a simple cable that goes to/from the sound card directly to the data jack. It's a very nice cable and all you need. I use it with my 817 and 857.
Go to ebay and do a search for:
"PSK31 / DATA CABLE YAESU FT-100 FT-817 FT-857 FT-897"

Merry Christmas to all !!!
Christmas vacation finally gave me the time to deal with the digi connection for my FT-857D.
I built a data cable which works for receiving (using MixW) and apparently works only when the rig is set to Packet but not on Digi ?!? The 857 disables the IN pin of the data jack when not on Packet ????
Any ideas ??

Update...
It turns out that the audio coming from the laptop isn't loud enough to drive the Digi input. Packet being FM is more sensitive than Digi and is driven without a problem...

In the MENU settings there is a SET GAIN FOR DIGI MODE
I cant remember where but its in there.
So its like turning up the Mike control but this one
is only for DIGI mode.
I think default was 50 but not sure,
