Has anyone ever tried this new little notebook (acer aspire one) on psk31, with any success. I am looking at getting this little computer to use as a portable psk station.

Hi Todd,
I don't have the Acer, I looked at the specs and review
http://techreport.com/articles.x/15329
should be good to go for psk !
I've run psk with slower and older laptops without any problems.
Which interface will you use, Signalink, other or home built ?

I am running digipan 2.0 on a 233 MHZ laptop with 64MB of RAM ,running windows 2000 feeding the laptop's audio to the rig's mic (using VOX for keying ).
Anything newer than a 233 :) with enough RAM should be usable for PSK

Take a look at the SignalinkUSB (www.tigertronics.com). It is an external USB sound card and radio interface.

You need to consider whether you are running the windows XP version or Linux. The device should most certainly be capable of running PSK under Linux. If you are running XP then it will depend on if you are running SSD or a "real" HD.
Like the other poster, I have run PSK 31 on as low as a Pentium 100 using win95. You can always find some of the old software like early versions of Digipan and there is even the orignial version of the PSK software that would run under Win3.1 and higher on a 486.
There are so many options I can't see how it would not work whith at least one of them.
With a netbook, your main problem is going to be screen size. If the PSK program is catering to people who are running at 768x1024 or greater, you will have problems seeing everything. I use an old laptop that is limited to 800x600 and there are programs that don't like being scrunched up.
I would recommend you get one of the netbooks with SSD and Linux. They would be a really cool way to run PSK with a mini rig like K2, FT817 from an ultra portable station.
If you just want to play with PSK, I would just beg, bum or buy at a garage sale an old win98 capable laptop and run that. No sense spending a lot of money unless the ultraportability is what you want.

Todd,
My XYL just received her Acer Aspire On the other day. I am going to load HRD and dm780 and I will see how it operates. We got ours from Walmart for $348 and had it delivered to the local store, so no shipping. It came with the larger battery, also.

I have fldigi V3 running on the Linux version of the Aspire One.It works fine with my Signal Link SL1+.
I have some issues with using the Signal Link USB as the Linux on the AAO (it is Linpus Linux which is a very small deritive of Fedora Core 8) is missing some core USB sound stuff and I haven't had the time to figure out exactly what additional packages need to be loaded to make it work.
I went with the Linux AAO as I liked the almost instant ON capabilites of the SSD and Linux, plus the added stability. Some of the reviews of the AAO mentioned that the WINXP version seemed a little anemic. However, some folks have bought the WINXP version with the hard drive and loaded Ubuntu Linux on it instead of Windows, with good success.
The AAO is a great little machine, that is very usable and cheap.
Cheers,
Michael VE3WMB
P.S. Anyone interested in running fldigi on Linux should join the linuxHam Yahoo group.
BTW fldigi runs great under Windows as well!

Todd,
I finally got HRD and dm780 on the xyl's Aspire and worked a station on RTTY last night. No apparanet RFI either way. The only problem I had was getting use to the keyboard since its about 95% of full size. Seems like a winner for portable digital operation.

For about $85 plus $40 shipping you can buy a refurbished 3GB+ computer loaded with Windows XP.
I bought one a couple months ago - it's faster than my Vista version.
