BUG encountered setting up AEA PK900 in RMS packet Reply

Hello colleague HAM’s,

I am the lonely soul busy to set up some serious EMCOMM networks in Europe… I have two systems running fine with Kantronics KPC9612, so I am familiar with the software and the way to set up things. I am not the typical left-handed idiot J … So please not the basic return questions like “did you switch the unit on”…

I want to use however AEA devices, I have several PK900 and a few DSP2232 units available that share the same command set. All have the latest firmware supporting internal gateways between both ports, an interesting option when talking about emcomm. I want to use port 2 VHF on RMS.

I understood from the accompanying configuration files (the so called .aps files) that they were not tested for this AEA devices. I tried them and using the log files I debugged them with some help from others on the yahoo lists. The ASCII command has to be removed as well as the TRANSPARANT command. After doing so the PK900 as well as the DSP2232 accept all configuration data.

Then things go seriously wrong. RMS packet server takes over command and starts with the “RESTART” command, that is not recognised at all by neither the PK900 nor the DSP2232. All following commands are producing timeout.

I posted this problem on the relevant yahoo reflectors and eham sites but very few people appear to be using these AEA controllers for this purpose.

It is not a controller issue because all controllers react fine when they get the very same RESTART command using a terminal program such as PROCOMM. They all reboot within a fraction of a second. The only thing I still can suspect is that the commands coming from RMS packet server contain a typo or might be fired at the wrong baudrate. I did send a copy of the logfile to Steve K4CJX previously as I was told he wrote the software but until now got no answer.

I am desperately trying to get these systems running but at this point I cannot go on as I know nothing about what RMS does at this point. What baudrate is used by RMS at this very stage ? This might be the clue ?

Is there anybody willing to take a deeper look at this bug, then I will be able to set up these important access points that will be located on 300 m high broadcast towers covering most of Belgium.

Thanks in advance for any help at all…

Pedro -

This should help!

AEA/Timewave multi-port, Gateway capable, Terminal Node Controllers (TNCs).
These TNCs provide significant function for data support during emergencies.
The most common versions of these controllers are the AEA PK-900 and the AEA DSP-2232 (not to be confused with the PK-232 which does not have gateway).
From an end user standpoint these two controllers function in the same manner.

The batch "scripts" are very useful in setting multiple parameters for your software!
