Digitally dead 706? Reply
by AC4RD on May 3, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
I've been inactive the last couple of years, but spent yesterday putting up an antenna and hooking up gear. My 706 MkIIG receives perfectly well on PSK but I can't get it to send a PSK signal. This is using the 6-pin "data jack" on the rear panel, and a soundcard interface.

The radio switches to transmit mode normally, but no RF comes out, not a bit. It works perfectly normally in SSB mode and in CW mode, normal RF output both on the internal meter and on the antenna tuner's meter. But not a milliwatt out on PSK. I used an audio signal tracer to confirm that there's output from the Rascal soundcard interface, on the correct pins of the plug that goes to the radio's 6-pin data jack.

My guess is that there's a bad connection somewhere in that audio-input path from the data jack, inside the radio. If I can find the RJ-45-style mike plug that came with the radio, I'll try inputting the PSK signal that way, to test that.

I thought I'd also ask here, to see if anybody had any other ideas, experience, or suggestions. Thanks!

Was there a load on the output of the Rascal when measuring the output to eliminate the possibility of measuring a leaking phantom voltage?

"Was there a load on the output of the Rascal..."
There wasn't--but I didn't give all the details, sorry. I was out of town for 18 months, and got my wife to ship me some gear to play with. THis happened when I got the gear at my temporary QTH, exact same thing, and I assumed it was the Rascal interface. Took it apart, couldn't find a problem, it still wouldn't work. Finally I gave up and ordered another Rascal interface. And I had the exact same problem. Sorry, I really should have included that information up front.

Two other suggestions:

Get someone to check your connector pin wiring. It's difficult finding your own errors.

Check your instruction manual wiring diagram with that shown on some interface web sites - even the manufacturers make mistakes.

Good luck.

Hi OM,
Check your menu settings, the port may need to be enabled. Check the manual too, you may have missed a setting somewhere else. Happens to me when ever I run PSK when I haven't been on for a while.

I had that with my Donner interface when I first got it and finally realized even usng the data port the VOX must be on the rig

Ken,

Im not familar with the Rascal. But I am familar with the 706. I have that plus the IC-703 and IC-718. I use the 13pin Acc jack but I have heard others use the 6pin Data Port. I know you said you used a Audio Signal Tracer but how much Audio was being put out. I would suggest you go back and look at the Sound Card settings. More times than not it is a setting. Check the Docs for the Rascal. I use the Tigertronics Signalink USB on all 3 of my rigs and no problems. Also once you get it back up and running make sure you have NO ALC on TX, I turn off the Mic gain and set the Power Output to 100watts and then let the speaker audio from the Sound Card control the Power Output. No issues with the ALC. Also someone mention checking the menu settings for the Data Port. I have never seen a setting for the port on any of my 3 rigs. Anyway good luck and lets us know what happens. 73 Steve KB6HOH

Check to make sure you have the proper send terminal activated. This is in your menu as "HSEND" and "VSEND" The 13 pin has separate pins for keying for VHF and HF.

NOT 9k6

I see this topic is still moderately active, so I'll update everybody. :-) I never really did figure out what was going on with the 706, but I put it in my car and ordered a TS-480 for the house. :-) That worked out quite nicely. :-) I appreciate all the input and suggestions! Thanks! --ken ac4rd
