You run software on the PC that generates and decodes PSK tones via the sound card. You wire an audio interface between the sound card audio in/out and the radio audio in/out and between the serial port RTS pin and the radio PTT circuit.

Try a Google search on PSK31 and you should find some interface circuits.

To test receive you can plug a computer microphone into the sound card and place it near your radio's speaker.

You do realize that the FT-990 CAT is TTL level and NOT RS-232 levels that are on a computer? You need a level converter like the Yaesu FIF-232. You can't simply make a DIN to DB9 adapter cable.

Here's the pin definition. The computer end is the DTE. http://www.camiresearch.com/Data_Com_Basics/RS232_standard.html#anchor341671

Can any one help..I dont want to spend a ton of money on Rigblaster or signal Link..Now maybe someone can give me a straight answer..Thanks for all the input from all.But as you see this seems to be a tuff question..?

The only 4-pin DIN connnector on the back of the radio is for RTTY. This CANNOT be connected directly to an RS-232 "D" connector and plugged into a computer serial port.

On the DIN connector:

Pin-1 is the shift or Mark/Space signal which is a TTL signal. It must be driven by some type of interface and cannot be connected directly to the computer. There is no corresponding RS-232 pin.

Pin-2 is Rx output which is audio. It must go via an interface to the sound card input. There is no corresponding RS-232 pin.

Pin-3 is PTT to put the transceiver in transmit mode. It must be grounded via an interface circuit. There is no corresponding RS-232 pin.

Bottom line is if you connect the 4-pin DIN (RTTY) jack to an RS-232 "D" connector and plug it into the computer it won't work and you will likely damage the radio and/or the computer.

I suggest you purchase or build a sound card interface and connect it to the 5-pin Packet connector on the radio. This connector has audio in, audio out, PTT, and ground that will connect to the sound card interface. The sound card interface generally uses on signal on the serial port for PTT and connects to the computer mike and headset connections on the sound card. You then run the radio in USB mode. You should be able to find loads of info on the Internet by searching for "sound card interface" or "psk31 interface".
