Hams in Iran? Reply
by W2DAB on June 25, 2009 Mail this to a friend!
With all the news coming out of Iran virtually shutdown by the government I was wondering, are there any amateur radio operators in Iran? Has there ever been?

I put this in digital because perhaps someone could get pictures out via HF and a digital mode.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi David

There certainly have been hams in Iran. I worked EP3SMH back in 2001. I know it's a long time back, but I'm pretty sure that Iranian hams are still on the air.

I worked several American hams in Iran during the days of the Shah. Late 70s . Excellent CW ops, probably in the military.

There are many times when Ham radio can the word out due to storms and natural disasters. Supposedly Transceivers are illegal in Iran. Many times members of the upper class are allowed to keep radios with tacit approval or bribes.

It is interesting the operators might be able to get word out with QRP power levels etc.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, there's at least one active ham in Iran. He has reportedly (according to various DX bulletins) been active on 20-meter SSB during his early mornings, local time. Unfortunately, when he gets on, we have no propagation from W4. Iran is one of the few remaining populated entities that I still need (as opposed to having confirmed many uninhabited islands thanks to DXpeditions).

I still need Iran, Bangladesh, Yemen, North Korea, Burma, Eritrea and Timor-Leste. Iran, Bangladesh and Timor-Leste would appear doable -- the others less so for various political reasons.

In 40 years of ham radio, I've only heard one Iranian station -- a Japanese diplomat who was active about 30 years ago. I heard him once on 15-meter SSB and he faded out as the band closed up at night and I've never heard another EP station since.

I have not heard any signals out of Iran since AUG 2000. Ironicaly, he was working an Iraqi station. I called to both after the QSO but neither came back.
