I was checking out 20m PSK31 last night and I saw these unusual traces on my screen - the first time I've seen anything like this done before...

How do you think he does that? I did try and ask him on the air last night but I suspect my question might not have survived translation.

Its possible to do this with HRD. Most of us hope it doesn't catch on.

Also possible with MixW software. This is like creating a fax image on paper by mapping the bits to tones which appear on the waterfall.

The mode is called Hellschreiber or Feldhellschreiber (abbreviated Hell) and has been around for a very long time:

Ah, ok...a bit of Hellschreiber - well that puts that to bed then.
Thanks for the input and as Melvyn says, I'm in the 'hope it doesn't catch on' camp.

Lets all do a little reading on a historic digital mode before condemning it. Kind of like telling AM or a CW ops that we hope it doesn’t catch on!

Lindy,
I think you misunderstand me. I'm not saying that I hope Hellschreiber doesn't catch on - only that the habit of preceeding PSK transmissions with Hell symbols doesn't catch on. That'd be analogous to bellowing "CQ" on phone before sending -.-. --.- on CW.
I intend giving Hellschreiber a go because it looks to me like a fun mode. I just don't think it has a place in the PSK waterfall. Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
Dean
