Can I use the motorola GP68 For armature radio? in the i have the vhf model and want to use it in the 2m band. but the real question here is about the fcc approval of this radio. can i use any radio or does it need fcc approval? i just got my tech. any help and advice about the rules and regulations would be great!

Armature radio? You can use almost anything. Just remember, you're responsible for emission standards.

Can it be used?... yes. But, programming this is not a good way to start in ham radio! Too many options will have to be changed.
I would recommend a unit designed for amateur use. Determine the repeaters in your area and go from there. The HTs are cute but a mobile unit will be more useful here. Check with local clubs in your area for local operations... they can help you!
Look up clubs at the ARRL site, www.arrl.org and search via zip code. There should be something local for you.

I was thinking about that, but i can't use a mobile unit. also I have a bad habit of breaking the electronics i cary on me every day so i wanted something rugged. after i bought the radio i heard that it may not be use able because the radio is not type excepted. but I couldn't find a definite answer.

"after i bought the radio i heard that it may not be use able because the radio is not type excepted"

Type acceptance is a legal concept that applies to other radio services. Part of the reason you took a test to get your ham ticket was so you could be allowed to build your own radio gear, and know that it was compliant with appropriate regulations for emission purity, power levels, and (recently) exposure. Your radio does not need to be "type accepted" for use under Part 97.

The GP-68 is no more rugged than many of the newer amateur HTs and perhaps less so. But it DOES say 'Motorola' on the front, for what that is worth. If you wanted really rugged, get an HT-220 or HT-1000 or similar.

I see there are plenty of clubs and repeaters in your area. Since you already have the unit, check and try to find someone there that could help you program that unit for some of the local machines.
If you cannot get it programmed, then take a look at the VX-170. It is in-expensive, built strong, and should take a fair amount of abuse. It has a long life battery but is strictly a 2 meter HT. It will get you on the air.

The GP68 was never intended to be distributed in this country. Motorola intended it for export sales. Therefore, you may find it difficult to get trustworthy GP68 programming software here in the US. I have seen GP68 programming software advertised and sold on e-Bay and other web sites, but I would not be confident of its "cleanliness" because, to my knowledge, Motorola itself has not made the software available in the US. I agree with another poster's suggestion that you go a different route.
