Speak Out: Your Favorite Radio:

A contributor asks, “What one transceiver did you have, now no longer in production, would you purchase again if it were back on the market? It would be exactly as originally manufactured. No extra bells and whistles added though improved components would be allowed.”

I can't compare anything with Icom 765 with all the filters installed and PB mode.If this rig breakes and I can't repair it I still keep it on my shack streight on my closed view. I am constantly wondering why on eBay this transceiver is sold for a very good price. I said it and I say it again, if Icom is going to remanufacture this transceiver for an aniversary event they will probably exceed any selling expectations. Of course I will buy buy right away another one.

It's not a transceiver but for a HF rig, the Drake B-line, However it would also have to be the same operating requirements that were needed for the vintage of the rig. Today we have computer digital modes and hams using computers for contesting with rigs that have memories and direct keypad entry which makes the B-line a bit out of date relative to the technology and how hams operate today. If it has to be a Transceiver and used in today's radio world I would say the Ten-Tec Omni V, even though it's greatly improved with the N4PY upgrade chip it was a fine rig stock and could be used with a computer so it could be competitive in today's events. Excellent crystal filtering and perfect QSK. Doesn't have internal CW keyer but I use an external keyer no matter what the rig has in it.

Not in that particular order, but I would go for the FT-990 and the TS-930SAT.
Still have the FT-990, which is a great allround performer. Great on SSB and QSK CW.
The sound of the 930 was great to listen to, but the lack of an internal keyer made me sell the rig.
